Merseyside and Rotterdam projects Essay
I would choose Merseyside project rather than Rotterdamââ¬â¢s not only for its superior prospect based on the quantitative criteria, but also for a more rational strategy consideration. For the four investment criteria, hereââ¬â¢s the elaboration. NPV. Since the two plants are of identical scale, age, design and similar project size, it makes sense to use NPV to compare the two projects. Not taken into account the erosion at Merseyside, the projected NPV of Rotterdam project is GBP4.49 million (GBP15.06 million- GBP10.57 million) higher than that of Merseyside project. IRR. The IRR of the Merseyside project (24.3%) is 5 percentage points higher than that of Rotterdam project (17.3%). Payback. Based on the cumulative free cash flow calculated, the payback period of Merseyside (3.8 years) is four years less than that of the Rotterdam projects (7.9 years), which is a big difference for a 15-year project. Growth in EPS. Calculated as the average annual EPS contribution of the project over its entire economic life (15 years), the average annual addition to EPS of Merseyside and Rotterdam projects are GBP0.022 and GBP0.030 respectively, with a difference of GBP0.008. A quick look at the four quantitative criteria might suggest that the two projects are of similar value to Victoria Chemicals; NPV and Growth in EPS are in favor of Rotterdam while IRR and Payback are in favor of Merseyside. However, taken into consideration the current status of the industry, the four criteria should not be of the same weight. As suggested by the director of sales, the industry is in a downturn with a possible oversupply issue around the corner. A price competition can be foreseen among the top suppliers of polypropylene in Europe, which would require a more liquid financial status of the company. A 7.9-year payback suggested by Rotterdam project might put the company into a dangerous financial situation among fierce competition and the company might even have no chance to enjoy the proposed benefits (higher NPV and Growth in EPS). With this being said, the Merseyside project is a better choice based on the quantitative analyses. From the strategy point of view, Merseyside project is still the project that is easier toà receive a green light from the senior management of the company for the following reasons. 1) The new Japanese process-control technology is still too young to ensure the stable efficiency gains across each of the production facilities. Even time will help reduce the variability of the efficiency gains generated by the system itself, none of the machinery at Victoria Chemicalsââ¬â¢ two plants has been tested for the compatibility for this Japanese technology. Admittedly, the potential success of the Rotterdam project will benefit the company significantly in terms of both market position and financial status, it was based on too many assumptions and thus less persuasive. 2) Although the Rotterdam project is a phased program, it is irreversible due to the complexity of the technology and the extent to which it would permeate the plant. That is to say, once the senior management choose the Rotterdam project and the new technology turns out to be less than satisfactory, all the investments are wasted. Moreover, it would be hard to sell the purchase option of a pipeline and its right-of-way if the plan didnââ¬â¢t work out due to the strong objection from some senior executives. 3) It would be harder for Victoria Chemicals to justify to investors its investment in Rotterdam project than in Merseyside project. Rotterdam project is dependent on a technology with unforeseeable future and propylene supply that are subject to vary over time. These factors are difficult to quantify and for investors, who have already cast doubt on the companyââ¬â¢s financial performance due to the corporate raider Sir David Benjamin, these can exacerbate their unsecure feeling towards the company and thus worsen the projected EPS. 4) Assume the Rotterdam project can achieve all the predicted financial goals and benefit both plants, thereââ¬â¢s no reason that the new control technology has to be installed now. O the contrary, Merseyside project is comparatively simpler for execution and the effects of it can be seen sooner (only a 1.5 months downtime for construction is needed versus 12 months downtime required by Rotterdam project). Given the facts mentioned, why not choose Merseyside project now and wait for two years to see how the market develops and decide whether to install the new control technology that might be more mature and stable at that time? Some may argue that the Merseyside project is too conservative and might jeopardize Victoria Chemicalsââ¬â¢ chance to become the pioneer in using advanced process control technology, however, based on aforementionedà analysis, I believe the Merseyside project will be the right choice at this timing but the flexibility of adding the technology in the future should be retained.

Race: White People and Color Purple Essay
What does race means? To me race means where we come from, the color of my skin, appearance and the beliefs I follow. Even though for many people is the skin color or the appearance of a person. Many of the minority races had being treated unequally in the United States since early colonization. Over time there has being an increase of Hispanics, Blacks and Asians, each one bringing new experiences to the country and changing it in a good way. I have learned in my choice unit books, that many people just see someoneââ¬â¢s skin color to try to figure out how they are instead of their personality. Most of the characters in those books had experience racism, lack of education, and economic statue. Each of the main characters had different stories, and went through different hardships but there is one thing in common. They come from a different culture and a poor family. Racism is one of the main issues of this country since slavery was introduced to the colonies and so did I saw it in different book and films this year. As I notice while reading The Color Purple whites has most of the superiority and so did man of any race. Sofia a big girl who wasnââ¬â¢t afraid of anyone and always talked back when there was something she didnââ¬â¢t like. One time she met a white woman and asked her if Sofia will like to work as her maid. Sofia refused that offered and so the white womanââ¬â¢s husband asked her again and she refused again, so the man slapped her and so Sofia responded back. At the end she was sent to jail for hitting a white person and was sentenced to work on the whiteââ¬â¢s family house for many years. She couldnââ¬â¢t see her children for many years or any one from her family. This example shows how many whites have superiority over certain race. Before you didnââ¬â¢t have to be rich, to be superior, you just needed to be white in order to set the rules, vote, and to be free in a few days if there was a crime. In my history class I saw a documentary how an African American 14 years old boy was killed just for talking to a white women and his case to get the guilty men in prison wasnââ¬â¢t that successful, and those men were set free and declared not guilty. After a few days a press told them they will receive money if they told the media the truth and so did the white men confessed and were sent to jail. This was a victory for the boyââ¬â¢s mom, but still they left an empty whole in that boyââ¬â¢s family. This is one of the few cases in the early years that a crime was solve to favor African Americans and many were just forgotten. Now days we have seeing that there is a huge percentage of color people dropping school every day. Many of these kids face pregnancy at an early age, they start looking for jobs, etc. In The Color Purple, Celie was abused by her stepfather and had two kids with him. He always lowered her esteem by telling her she was dumb and fat. She didnââ¬â¢t want to go to school for this causes but slowly she started learning how to read and write because her sister helped her. Later on she created her own store and triumph in life. Also in the film A Better Life we can see how a community of Hispanics has lowered education and many of the gangs are formed inside school. Schools are supposed to represent a safety environment so everyone can learn. The school environment I saw in the film was kind of like a jail. Police was everywhere the school and many kids had tattoos everywhere in their body. Many poor cities are more likely to have a lack of education and many of them are black or Latinos. In Macho, the people in Mexico living in that city were struggling for a job. The ones that had a job didnââ¬â¢t make a lot of money to bring food to their families. Since thatââ¬â¢s a big issue, many falls in the hands of coyotes and try to immigrate illegally to its neighbor country which is the United States. Many try to get a working visa but also many fail, and the only choice they had was to travel by the desert. A lot of people died in the process of passing border or they were left to die or they were shot but gang members. In conclusion races are the one that define this country because many of us came from different cultures. We came to the United States to find freedom, which the first amendment allowed to us, also to escape poverty of our countries, and give our family a better future. Many of the families that migrate to this country do it in different forms. Many innocent people face discriminations and racism because of their skin color or how they look. Their communitiesââ¬â¢ faces lack of educations, many of the schools are not receiving help from the government. Poor communities are the ones that have a lot of diversity including blacks, Hispanic and Asians. This people have hardship looking for jobs and sometimes their only choice is to join a gang. Race has changed this country in different ways, and hopefully in years racism will have a different face.

The Narrative Night By Elie Wiesel - 1286 Words
Why must humans be either inherently good or inherently evil? The narrative Night by Elie Wiesel illustrates humanity in one of the darkest periods of history, to abandon humanity to survive vs keeping it from spiraling down into hopelessness. As Eliezer struggles to survive against starvation and abuse, he also grapples with the destruction of his faith in Godââ¬â¢s justice and battles with the darker sides of himself.Throughout the novel, Eliezer feels a conflict between protecting his father who poses as a burden and giving himself the best chance of survival. The narrative also brings up a very important question, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Are humans inherently good or evil?ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ How can we ever compare the kindness of the French girl who healed Eliezer s wounds to the SS officers that had beaten him cruelly? We can not, and not just for that reason alone. Are humans born inherently good and became soiled by the filth and corrupt of the world, conditioning them to forget t heir morals and turn against each-other? Or are humans born inherently evil judging by their capability to commit heinous crimes and there is no goodness in this world, just people who are far less evil than others? In my opinion, humans are born neither inherently good or evil. Itââ¬â¢s not as if Eliezer was born with a moral compass, he was raised with high morals and to serve God (and abandoning him when he feels God is cruel to let them suffer). His experience in the camps allows him to explore the darker concepts in humanityShow MoreRelatedEye Motif in Night by Elie Wiesel959 Words à |à 4 Pagessouls and display our true inner emotions. Bilingual Education Persuasive Essay - 991 Words
Over the last decade or so, important legislation has been implemented to positively ensure fair and equal access to a quality education for English Language Learners (ELL). Change did not happen without there being obstacles to overcome. There were many overturned cases that initially sought to strip English Language Learners of their basic rights to an education. Yet, there would eventually be legislation instituted to help alter the course. Early court cases, provide examples of abject inconsideration, injustice, and racial discrimination imposed on those in need of specific education services, like the Non-English speaking students. At the time, the basis for segregating the students was due to their deficiencies in English. It was further concluded, to be ââ¬Å"a violation of the due-process and equal-protection clauses of the U.S. Constitutionââ¬â¢s 14th Amendmentâ⬠. While earlier rulings and legislation sought to address and improve on educational programs for ELLs, it simply wasnââ¬â¢t enough. Presidents Under Fire Essay Example For Students
Presidents Under Fire Essay Presidents under FireRyan SpicerEnglish 1010 FC10/5/98Sex scandals, Poor Economics, and Public Relations are all problems that are being faced by the Worlds most powerful leaders. President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin are both under steady attack from other would be political leaders. But does this pressure take away time that could better be spend on running they country? Political instability has rocked the country of Russia. Still in itââ¬â¢s infancy; Russia has only had 1 leader since the demise of the Soviet Union. His name is Boris Yeltsin. He accepted the presidency with the intention to build a new country with capitalism. This is quite a task, but he accepted it head on and has stuck to that goal. But the economy is quickly going down in value. The Ruble (Russian currency) is worth virtually nothing. In the United States Bill Clinton is under investigation concerning his alleged affair with a White House Intern. Mr. Clinton has made several public speeches denying the relationship but later came clean with the public concerning the matter. But with all the public attention brought up concerning both Presidents, how are they expected to run their countries if they spend most of their time defending themselves. Mr. Yeltsin has made several questionable moves, including firing and the re-hiring government officials. He is trying to get his country back into order. The President has a Parliament screaming to have him resign, and all the while he is being distracted from the task at hand. He has a government to run. In public speeches Mr. Yeltsin sticks to his Laisezz faire approach to government. That means he lets the economy run its self. There is no governmental interaction with the economy. He sticks to this as his defense and he believes in it. But everyday he is attacked by the media, and government officials who want change. With this as his only defense he is quickly losing the faith of the people whom elected him. But on the other side of the world there is a different crisis to debate. Mr. Clinton is in the public doldrums of verbal attack by the media and governmental stagnation. No one in the government wants to be associated with Mr. Clinton anymore. Even most of his elected party has severed ties with the President. He is quickly losing the support of his people as well.Mr. Yeltsin has been hard at work, putting countless hours into solving the financial crisis. All the while taking the beating being dealt out by newspapers and on TV. Mr. Yeltsin has made several questionable moves, including firing and the re-hiring government officials. With having made several public speeches denying the relationship, he later admitted to some indecent actions but covered his actions with a confusing trail of moral jargon. This is not the first time Mr. Clinton has been investigated for something. .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f , .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .postImageUrl , .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f , .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f:hover , .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f:visited , .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f:active { border:0!important; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f:active , .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud81b8002ee49fc10214b1a16f230705f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Who Are We to Judge Essay He has also been investigated for a failed Financial Deal before his term of office as well as a sexual encounter during his term of office as Governor of Arkansas. Public Relations are a big problem with both Presidents. Mr. Clinton is very selective with his public statements. He does this to cover himself for legal reasons. But it is very obvious during every public speech that he is hiding information. This ââ¬Å"Adds fuel to the Fireâ⬠so to speak. Mr. Yeltsin uses the simple up-front opproach of telling the simple truth and sticking by his values. The only problem is that in todayââ¬â¢s world things are a little more complicated. Dealing with the blame forced upon them, whether it is deserved or not is a big problem. With both Presidents being attacked everyday, they are losing more votes than they are gaining all the while trying to run the two most powerful governments in the World. In conclusion I think that Scandals and Financial troubles are causing a bigger problem than they are. It distracts from the job, which is a big job to begin with. These people are businessmen, and their job is to conduct business. They are not elected to battle of claims against their integrity. Some problems may be brought along by them or are brought along by the development of a country. In either case the job is turning into less of job and more of a personal battle to defend themselves. The Iceman Cometh Essays - Films, The Iceman Cometh, Iceman, Pipe
The Iceman Cometh Denial in The Iceman Cometh Denial is the refusal to admit the truth. It is the refusal to accept or acknowledge the reality or validity of a thing or idea. Many characters in The Iceman Cometh suffer from denial and false hope. O'Neill places these characters in the appropriate setting in which they are able to fantasize about their dreams. Amidst the drunken and misguided characters, O'Neill presents a few that the reader builds hope and sympathy for. Each character uses a pipe dream in order to be able to become blind to their downfalls and to reality. In the bar setting, characters in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh portray the theme of denial by embracing pipe dreams. Harry Hope is the elderly owner of a saloon and rooming house. The narrow five-story structure presents the ideal setting for self-destruction. The characters come here in order to drink away their problems (O'Neill 597). All of the characters in the novel come to Harry Hope's bar as an escape. They manage somehow to remain drunk and delude themselves(Gagey 332), with a few harmless pipe dreams about their yesterdays and tomorrows (O'Neill 620). They feel sheltered and protected from the real world while in the bar. They do not have to face reality here. The dreamers have come to Hope's because, ostensibly, they are failures in the outside world. What lies outside is a world without value, a hostile society to which no man can possibly belong, and from which they must take refuge (Bogard 54). The characters deny the fact that there is a real world out there, in where they may succeed. They are much more content taking refuge in the bar, where they do not have to strive for or work at anything. They can just wallow in their sorrows and drink them all away. Each character has a separate pipe dream to face. The pipe dream allows the character to live in a state of denial. It is a false belief or a false hope that the character holds on to. This is Lessard 2 in order to blind them of reality. By embracing a pipe dream, the characters feel they do not have to face the bitter reality that confronts them. The pipe dreams make life tolerable for the time being (55). Rocky, the bartender at Hope's bar, denies the fact that he is a pimp. Because he is a bartender, he believes he cannot be a pimp. He blatantly disregards the fact that he takes money from two prostitutes and protects them as well. He says to one of the prostitutes, 'What would you do if I wasn't around? Give it all to some pimp' (O'Neill 603). The sad fact that O'Neill presents is that Rocky truly believes that he is not a pimp. He has fooled nobody but himself, and doesn't even realize it. He also holds a pipe dream of being able to open a bar of his own someday. Margie and Pearl, the two prostitutes, have pipe dreams of one day getting married. They are also living in a state of denial. Margie says, 'Anyway, we wouldn't keep no pimp, like we was reg'lar old whores. We ain't da t bad' (603). These characters live their life through blind eyes (Orr 90). They refuse to see who and what they really are (91). These three characters deny who they are and refuse to accept it. Although they all have good qualities, they do not acknowledge their imperfections and overlook their unhealthy lifestyles. Ed Mosher, Harry Hope's brother-in-law, was once a circus man. Pat McGloin was once a police officer. Piet Wetjoen was once the leader of a Boer commando. Cecil Lewis was once the Captain of the British infantry. James Cameron was a Boer War correspondent. Willie Oban is a Harvard Law School alumnus. Joe Mott was once the proprietor for a Negro gambling house. Although these characters seem to be permanent fixations at Harry Hope's bar, they refuse to acknowledge that fact. They all retain the pipe dream of shortly returning to their previous jobs. Joe Mott says, 'I'll make my stake and get a new gamblin' house open before you boys leave' (O'Neill 600). All
